WHAT’S NECK PAIN
Your neck is made up of Vertebrae, which is extended till the upper torso. The movements and motions of your head are supported by the connective tissues of your neck (bone, ligament, and muscles). Neck pain is a common indication, which can be caused by any inflammation, injury or even by any abnormal movement.
Neck pain or stiffness in the neck is experienced by many patients occasionally. Sometimes it is caused by the bad posture, or sometimes it may even cause by an injury due to fall.
Neck pain is not an acute condition, which can stay for a few days, and is manageable and curable with specific, medication and remedies.
CAUSES OF NECK PAIN:
It is hard to diagnose any precise cause for neck pain, but whatever it may be like, you must know some of the causes of neck pain and be sure to stay alert.
Muscle Strain or Tension:
At times the muscles of your neck get strained like
- Bad posture while sleeping
- Sitting in front of the computer and typing for longer
- Working in the same position without changing it
- Jerking your neck abnormally during gymming or exercise
Your neck is a vulnerable body part to get injured easily. Primarily because of an accident, fall, or when your neck muscles or ligaments, are forced to move outside their normal range.
Your spinal cord is also tending to get damaged if the neck bones are fractured due to some injury. The sudden jerking of the head or neck is commonly called Whiplash.
Your body indicates you many complications due to various pains. It could be anything, including your neck pain, which can imply that something else and severe is going inside your body.
You will be shocked to know that Neck pain can be an indication of the Heart attack. But it is not enough. You can compare your pure neck pain and the neck pain indication heart attack very easily when neck pain is present with other symptoms of a heart attack like:
- Joint pain etc.
The thin tissue that surrounds the brain and the spinal cord of your body gets inflamed in this health condition. Meningitis comes up with a symptom of a stiff neck. This can be a medical emergency and is a fatal disease.
OTHER CAUSES OF NECK PAIN:
Neck pain is considered to be a pervasive physical problem. Most of the time, the pain is left untreated by many patients because it is hard to understand the sternness of the pain or the leading cause behind it. Though neck pain due to an injury or accident is common, there can be other hidden or underlying problems too.
Osteoporosis weakens the bones, and weak bones are causes of many pains in the body including the neck pain
Patients who suffer from Rheumatoid arthritis feel pain and swelling in their neck.
Spondylosis is another reason for severe neck pain. As you age the cervical discs start degenerating. The space between the vertebrae gets narrowed, and it adds stress to your joints causing pain
If you have a precious background of any injury or accident, the herniated cervical disk is a possible problem and can cause neck pain too. If any disk protrudes, it adds pressure to your spinal cord and nerve roots and causes you pain. This condition is commonly known as slip disk.
HOW TO GET IMMEDIATE RELIEF WHEN YOUR NECK PAIN IS CRITICAL:
- If you have simple neck pain, you can get relief at home, before going to your doctor. You can follow these simple steps for that:
- Prefer ice bags to apply in the are you are feeling the pain, after that use a heal=ting pad, hot sponging or sot shower
- You can prefer taking Over the counter pain relievers like acetaminophen
- When in pain you must ignore any exhausting activities, including sports, heavy lifting, etc. Also, I prefer performing your regular operations slowly.
- Try a simple exercise like moving your head side-to-side or up and down
- Change your position of sleeping standing or sitting more often
- Use a special neck pillow to support your neck while sleeping
- You can go for a gentle neck massage if needed.
WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE TREATMENTS OF NECK PAIN?
Before jumping into any treatment procedure, you must be sure about the disease first. Once your problem has been diagnosed, possible treatments can be applied. To be sure about the cause of your neck pain, your doctor may perform a physical exam or can ask you for your previous medical history.
If you have preferred taking any home remedy or OTC medicines, your doctor must be known about that. If you have recently met an accident or fall. Don’t forget to tell your doctor about that.
As I mentioned earlier, the treatment of neck pain is decided through the diagnosis. To diagnose your leading cause behind the neck pain, you may go through any or more than one of the following tests:
- CT Scan
- MRI Scan
- Blood Tests
- Electromyography etc.
Depending upon the severity of your pain or cause of the pain, your doctor may suggest various treatment processes, including:
- Exercise, Stretching, etc.
- Neck Collar
- Ice and heat therapy
- Antibiotics and pain killers
- Surgery is required.
Acupuncture, massage and TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) are other treating possibilities where required.
TAKEAWAY: Neck pain might sound like a simple and curable body problem, but can turn out to be a significant health hazard if left untreated. As the cause behind the pain can be anything, including significant symptoms, it is better you consult to your doctor. When you try some home remedies and fail to have desired relief, it is an alarm that you need to talk to your doctor right away.
Don’t prefer administering much pain killers as they can cause other symptoms too. Neck pains are usually caused by bad postures and muscle strains. Try out simple home remedies and exercise and try some changes while sleeping.
Good posture can restore the sore muscle and can give you instant relief within a few hours.
