We all have suffered from toothache at some or the other point in our lives. Isn’t it? It is basically a pain or soreness in the tooth or around it. The pain may be either mild or extreme depending upon its cause. The pain is sharp, throbbing or constant. Some of the patients may only experience pain if any pressure is applied to the tooth. The symptoms may include the following.
- low fever
- Paint while chewing
- Sensitivity to cold air or liquids
- Bleeding or discharge from the gums or around the tooth
- Injury in that area
- Foul smell
In some cases, the toothache goes on its own by maintaining a good oral health care routine. Whereas in others, it may be complicated and need surgery as well. Never prefer self-diagnosis or treatment as there can be a critical underlying issue for your toothache. Consult a dentist immediately if you have severe pain lasting for 1-2 days, a fever, headache, earache or pain while opening your mouth wide.

Toothache is generally due to inflammation of the pulp which is the central portion of the tooth. It has nerve endings which are very sensitive to pain. There can be various causes that lead to toothache amongst which tooth decay, damaged tooth, and gum disease are the common causes.
Bacteria that enter into your mouth can form a layer on the outer portion of the tooth referred to as enamel. They start feeding on the sugar from the food particles you eat and lead to the production of acid that breaks down the enamel forming a cavity. A cavity may not be painful in the beginning but over time, the decay spreads to the center of the tooth causing pain. The pain might get severe if the abscess reaches the nerves.
Sometimes, a tooth can get damaged by a physical means leading to the damaged tooth. It can be fractured, cracked, chipped, or even bad billing can lead to a toothache.
Gum diseases can often occur with bad oral hygiene. The symptoms may include redness, swelling, bleeding, and pain in the gums. For instance, in Gingivitis the gums become red and swollen. If left untreated, it could lead to Periodontitis in which the gums are detached from the tooth and become a habitat for bacteria.
Home remedies :
- Clove oil is very effective against toothache. It is a natural antiseptic with no side effects and easily available in any drug store. Take a cotton ball, dip it or soak it in the clove oil and bite on it until you feel relieved.
- Salt water is also effective in relieving mild pain. As salt is a natural disinfectant, it can remove the unwanted debris from your teeth. Mix half a teaspoon of salt in warm water and gargle it for a couple of minutes.
- Garlic is another remedy to numb your toothache as it is a natural pain reliever and it is also the most commonly found ingredient in every kitchen. You can chew upon a fresh garlic clove or make a paste out of it and apply on the affected region.
- Peppermint is a herb known for its cooling and soothing properties. Take a peppermint tea bag and place in your freezer until its chill and place in on your tooth. This gives instant relief from the pain.
- Hydrogen peroxide, chemically known as H2O2 can be used to rinse the mouth as it has antibacterial properties. It removes plaque and reduces inflammation. Dilute it with water and use as a mouthwash. Make sure to spit it at after gargling for a couple of minutes.
Maintaining oral hygiene is a crucial task in your day to day life. Brush your teeth twice a day with a toothpaste that has fluoride in it. Change your toothbrush every 3-4 months. Floss daily. Stay away from smoking and chewing any kind of nicotine products. Eat a well-balanced meal. Keep your dental hygiene in check by going to the dentist once in every 6 months.
